It cannot get better for the IITians at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IITD). Often accused of being geeks, who are more interested in solving numericals, programming and cracking codes and comfortable with engineering terms; the students of IITD did not mind shaking a leg at the annual Board of Hostel Management event recently organised at the Nalanda Grounds in institute''s campus.
With the popular number from movie ''Kisna'' playing at the backdrop, IITians dancing to the tune of ''Wo Kisna Hai...'' at the stage was a revelation.
The best, however, was reserved for the award ceremony where hostels were awarded trophies in different categories for their performance during the past one year. The categories included Board for Student Publication (BSP), Board for Student Welfare (BSW), Board for Sports Activities (BSA), Board for Recreation and Cultural Activities (BRCA), Board for Hostel Management (BHM) and British High Commission (BHC) trophy for overall performance.
With students from Nilgiri, Karakoram, Aravali, Jwalamukhi, Kumaon, Vindhyachal for boys, and Kailash and Himadri for girls rooting for their respective hostels, the stage was set for a grand finale. With the announcement of an award in each category, students from winning hostels could be seen charging towards the stage to grab the winning trophy from the director of IITD, R S Sirohi. The dean and deputy dean of students S M Ishtiaque and S K Gupta, meanwhile, had a tough time controlling the bunch of enthusiastic students who were going wild with the announcement of awards in each category. The bursting of firecrackers, moreover, lit up the sky, which was the icing on the cake.
All hell broke loose when the dean of students announced that the Kumaon Hostel has emerged as the winner of BHC Trophy for being the best performer in different categories.
The institute, recently, saw two-day event called ''Pearl Reunion 2005'' for alumni batches of 1965, 66,67, 68 and 69 too. Speaking on the occasion, the general secretary of students'' affairs council at the IITD, Shekhar Tyagi said: "We conceptualised the reunion event to bring students from all these batches together. It has been a great learning experience for students while organising this event. We feel that 35 years is a long time during which a lotof things have changed. The intensity, however, is still there and this can be found from such a huge gathering from all these batches."
Speaking on the occasion, the dean of alumni affairs, Manoj Datta remarked, "This institution comes in the life of students for four years. This binds us together, and this has been able to make an impact as IITians have emerged the brand ambassador of the institute through their work and presence across the world."
The first-day of the event saw the presentation of a skit prepared by the students title ''Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi...'' The two-day event saw interactive sessions on ''Society, Technology and IITians'', ''Future Vision and Alumni-Institute Interaction'' and ''Empowering IIT Delhi and IITians'' between students and alumni of IITD.
